The Census data includes details of institutions in two ways. In most cases an Institution was recorded in a separate Institution enumeration book, which was completed by the Head of the Institution and included details of the institution itself as well as a list of all the people associated with it. Institutions recorded in this way can be located by the institution name and location using the Search for an Institution. Example Institution Search for name Workhouse with the Place Keyword Manchester Smaller institutions were sometimes recorded in the ordinary enumeration pages within an Enumeration District book, in the same way as large households. Finally it may be that you do not have enough information to identify the institution and you need to do some more research before using the Census on-line service.
