Searching for a place will produce a list of Enumeration Districts containing the place (e.g. Civil Parish) which you specify. An Enumeration District was the area covered by a particular enumerator, who collected the details of all persons within that area. Enumeration District areas varied in size, with some containing several small hamlets and others just containing part of a larger town. The particular parish or village that you are seeking may, therefore, appear in more than one. From the returned list you can select a particular Enumeration District and examine the pages within it. This type of search will probably be of most interest to local historians. If you wish to find an individual or a family you should use "Search for a Person". The Basic Search allows you to enter place keywords which will search for a particular word or phrase in the 4 major fields (Administrative County, Civil Parish, Ecclesiastical Parish and Town, Village or Hamlet). Both searches allow you to search for variations of the place name by using wildcards.
