Search for a Place

Searching for a place will produce a list of Enumeration Districts containing the place (e.g. Civil Parish) which you specify. An Enumeration District was the area covered by a particular enumerator, who collected the details of all persons within that area. Enumeration District areas varied in size, with some containing several small hamlets and others just containing part of a larger town. The particular parish or village that you are seeking may, therefore, appear in more than one. From the returned list you can select a particular Enumeration District and examine the pages within it.

This type of search will probably be of most interest to local historians. If you wish to find an individual or a family you should use "Search for a Person".

The Basic Search allows you to enter place keywords which will search for a particular word or phrase in the 4 major fields (Administrative County, Civil Parish, Ecclesiastical Parish and Town, Village or Hamlet). For more information on how to specify "Place Keywords" see places

The Advanced Search allows you to refine your search, by entering the details in one or more of the specific place fields.

Both searches allow you to search for variations of the place name by using wildcards.

Examples: entering Tibb_rton will search for Tibberton, Tibborton, Tibburton etc. Entering Tib*ton will search for Tiberton, Tibberton, Tibiton etc:
