Address

Addresses appear in the Census data in a wide variety of different forms. Individual buildings may be designated by a name, a number or a description eg: "the end cottage". Streets may have a formal name or a description eg: "lane behind church" or no name at all. Village and Parish boundaries may have changed over time.

General Search Tips -

To locate an area, eg: a village, enter a popular designation such as "post office", "police", "vicarage" or "station" in the House and/or Street Box and the County, Borough or Parish name in the Place boxes.

To locate a Street, eg: "Church Street", enter just the name, eg: "Church" in the House and/or Street Box and the County, Borough or Parish name in the Place boxes.

To locate a house, eg: "49 High Street" or "The Firs Church Lane", enter the number or name AND the street name in the House and/or Street Box. e.g. "49 High" or "Firs Church".

Common abbreviations are often used for words like "street", "avenue", "Saint" etc: and these may vary where they have been recorded by different enumerators. You should omit these words wherever possible and enter only the essential names of houses and streets.
eg: to locate The Old Talbot, New Street, Ledbury enter just "Talbot New" in the House and/or Street Box and "Ledbury" in the Place Keywords box.
