House and/or Street |
Use this box to enter the details of the address (normally a house or other building) for which you are searching. Search Tips If you are not sure of the house name or number, or the house did not have a unique designation at the time of the census, then enter only the street name to get a list of all houses in the street. If you are not sure of the street name use the wildcards to find similar names. eg: "woodle*" will return "Woodley" and "Woodleigh". If there is no street name for the address, then enter only the house name or number. eg: "Manor Farm". Isolated dwellings may have neither house name nor street name but were listed only as "cottage", "caravan", "shed", "stable" etc: To locate these enter only the appropriate word or abbreviation eg "cottage" or "cott", or use the wildcard to find both eg: "cott*". Words like "street" have common abbreviations and addresses may be recorded eg: as "Church Street" or "Church St" by different enumerators. Omit these words wherever possible and enter just the name eg: "Church". To search for a particular type of dwelling you can enter just the
type eg: "farm","shop","hotel" etc:
, but note that this will only list entries where the word you entered
appears in the name of the establishment eg: entering "hotel"
will locate The Crown Hotel but not The Crown Inn. Mobile and unusual dwellings eg: houseboats, caravans, stables, sheds
etc: , are usually recorded as a description together with some location
information eg: "caravan beside the inn", "shed in
the farmyard".
