Where Born

If you know it enter the individual’s place of birth in this box but use this facility with caution. Places of birth have not been standardised for the 1901 Census. This means that if you enter a term in this field the database will look for occurrences of that exact term as recorded at the time. If you enter a term in this field you must also specify the gender of the person you are seeking.

A person’s place of birth may not always have been described as you expect. It can be extremely variable, often recording the exact village, hamlet or even address but sometimes just recording county or country. Entering a term in this box could lead to the exclusion of the individual you are seeking.

Example entering Norwich in the box would return individuals with place of birth recorded as Norwich or Norwich, Norfolk. Conversely, if you enter Norwich into the box but your individual was recorded with place of birth as just Norfolk on the census form you would exclude the person you are seeking.
As this data is not standardised, to improve the chances of locating a person, it is recommended that you first try entering the smallest known geographical area (e.g. hamlet or village name).
