How do I order a Military death certificate?

Once you have located your ancestor in our military deaths list you can then go to the General Register Office (GRO) to order a copy of their death certificate.

All WW deaths are held by the GRO overseas section

You need all the information from the index to order your certificate (see example below)

The reference would be e.g. WW1 Army deaths 1918 Volume G1 page 370. The "Volume" refers to the register.

Here is an example of person information you need to send to the GRO to order certificate from them:

Military Section: Army

Forename: CHARLES W.
Surname: DANES
Rank: Pte.
Unit: C.Gds.
Military Number: 21603
Year Of Death: 1918
Volume: Volume G.1; Page 370

When ordering your WW death certificate from GRO:

You need to select GRO death overseas events if order on line

If ordering by post address envelope to Overseas Section
